Coaching Experience
Coach Lutz has worked at elite summer camps alongside some of college basketball’s most respected college coaches, including:
- Rick Barnes, current head coach at at the University of Tennessee (24 career NCAA tournament appearances)
- Pat Kennedy, former head coach at Florida State University and DePaul University (8 career NCAA tournament appearances)
- Lou Campanelli, former head coach at James Madison University and the University of California (6 career NCAA tournament appearances)
Lutz was recruited by and played his college ball for three Hall-of-Fame coaches:
- Gary Williams, University of Maryland, 2001 National Champions
- Fran Dunphy, current head coach at LaSalle University, former head coach at Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania
- Ed Tapscott, former head coach of the Washington Wizards, current director of player development
Immediately upon graduating from American University, Lutz was accepted a position as a Division I assistant coach, but he stepped down from that position to pursue a professional playing career in Europe instead.
After spending several years away from the game to start a family and a small business, Lutz returned to the hardwood in 2004 when he accepted an offer to become the Head Varsity Basketball Coach of Covenant Life School (CLS) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Coach Lutz took a CLS program that had never won a league championship, and by his third season at the helm he had turned the program around to win it’s first league title. The following season Lutz’s team set numerous school and league scoring records on their way to posting an undefeated conference record and another tournament championship. Under Coach Lutz’s leadership, CLS became the first team in league history to repeat as champions, and the first team to finish undefeated in league and tournament play. The Cougars finished with a 21-3 record in his last year at the helm.
During his brief time as the head coach at CLS, Lutz developed nine all-league players, five first-team all-league players, and a two-time league most valuable player. One of his players went on to become one of the DC area’s leading 3-point shooters, while another player went on to be a county scoring leader. Seven of Coach Lutz’s former players went on to play in college, with two players receiving full Division I scholarships.
After leaving CLS to spend more time with his growing family and business, Lutz returned to the sidelines as the Assistant Varsity Coach at Damascus High School. In just one season at Damascus, Coach Lutz developed two all-county players, and the team was one point shy of playing in their first regional final in over 30 years.
Coach Lutz also spent five seasons as a coach and advisor for the Damascus Sports Association youth basketball program, hosting clinics for middle school players who would go on to become All-County and All-State performers at Damascus High School and eventually play at the college level.
